Caring about our bodies and appearance is a natural human trait. Who doesn’t want to feel confident and vibrant in their own skin? But what if those same products we often use to enhance our beauty are, in fact, ruining our health? This is a legitimate and pervasive threat, but many people are unaware of the toxic damage they’re exposing themselves to on a daily basis.
Over the past decade, clinical research has detected a link between the onset of cancer and the use of chemicals in mainstream cosmetic and skincare brands. Scientists have found that eating organic foods and eliminating preservatives from our diets isn’t enough to decrease the risk of cancer. The ingredients we put on our bodies can be just as harmful (or healing) as the ingredients we put in our bodies. For instance, when we slather our faces with moisturizer or douse our legs with lotion, the chemicals found in these products are absorbed through our pores and filtered directly into the bloodstream.
This causes toxic load on the system which can affect internal organs and lead to the development of tumors, so it’s vital to be an informed consumer and read labels on the cosmetic aisle. The following is a breakdown of known carcinogens used in mass-manufactured skincare products. These hazardous chemicals are a breeding ground for cancer cells and should be avoided at all costs.
Parabens are the most common artificial ingredients in skincare, and these compounds synthetically imitate human estrogen. They are used as preservatives and to fight bacteria growth, but their high levels of estrogenic activity result in hormone imbalance which can amplify the risk of breast or endometrial cancer.
Heavy metals such as aluminum, mercury, lead and chromium, among others, are used to add color and pigmentation, but too much buildup of these metals is taxing on the body. Over-exposure can attack the nervous, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine and gastrointestinal systems which increases the spread of tumors.
Formaldehyde is present in some lotions, soaps and cosmetics as an antiseptic ingredient, and often, it is diluted in water to create formalin which is how it will appear on most labels. This harsh, flammable compound is known to intensify the formation of tumors, and is also a contributing factor to leukemia and other blood disorders.
Triclosan inhibits bacteria growth which enhances the shelf-life of many skincare brands, but this chemical is also an endocrine disruptor that impairs hormone function and development. The triclosan additive has been found to cause reproductive cancer in women, prostate cancer in men, and thyroid cancer in both genders.
Given how commonplace these toxins have become in skincare products, it’s a safer option to choose organic alternatives.
